Severance
The Maritime division makes up our second largest membership group after the electrical division and whilst there are some members with the option to secure their entitlements in a Protect severance account, most Maritime members have joined with us for income protection insurance.
We want to thank the Victorian Branch of the ETU for allowing the MUA to participate in Protect and for all their hard work over many years in the establishment of the best income protection and redundancy provider in the country.

Income protection
Protect income protection was first secured in the Maritime industry in 2011. Initially introduced into several agreements in Western Australia, we now have Maritime members in every Australian state and territory. Workers from all major stevedoring companies inclusive of Patricks, DP World, Qube and Toll and nearly all seafarers, are Protect members, each enjoying the security of illness and injury cover that is global, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Regarded by members as one of the most important financial safety nets for workers and their families facing the difficulties of non-work related injury and illness, we consistently receive positive feedback about the support of Protect Field Officers and general experience with Protect.
Nearing 6,000 maritime workers are covered by Protect's superior income protection insurance, supporting those with anything from serious cancer claims to accidental dental issues.
Free counselling
Protect members often engage with us when they’re experiencing a difficult time. We partnered with Hunterlink on the strong recommendation of the Maritime Union of Australia and provide free, independent professional counselling support services to our membership Australia-wide, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Protect Counselling is operated confidentially by the Hunterlink team of external counsellors via a free phone service, face-to-face sessions or on-site counselling services, as needed.
Protect Counselling is a service for:
- individuals seeking support,
- workers wanting advice on support for colleagues,
- family members of Protect.
Protect are provided basic non-identifying statistics on the use of the service including number of calls, age range and industry.
